A unified effort...by pilots...for pilots

Events in Himachal, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra over the last few years involving paragliding accidents had forced the state Govts/courts/local police to move towards banning the sport in the absence of a regulatory body.

This situation has threatened to kill the sport in its nascent stage. If we do not act now the day will not be long when even to inflate our gliders we will need to take permission from a govt. official, our air space will be severely restricted and in many places we wont even be allowed to fly and the sport will be eventually regulated by non pg pilots who do not understand the sport and in the end will make decisions detrimental to our community.

It gives us great pleasure to inform you that to counter this situation a few devoted pilots have got together to form " The Paragliding Federation of India" (PGFI)

Resolving the issues

1.) The guys at PGFI have resolved to rejuvenate their effort and appeals to the Indian Paragliding community to support this movement for protecting the future of this sport in India

2.) It is our intention to set the ball rolling and hand over the reins to an elected organizing committee at the earliest.

3.) We invite all the pilots of the Indian Paragliding community to avail membership of PGFI and actively participate in its development.

4.) We request to all pilots who would like to volunteer and contribute towards building the organisation to come forward and contact us. The sport needs your help!

Some of the urgent issues that we are addressing right now are

Safety

a.) Stretchers
b.) First aid kits
c.) Certified First aid courses
d.) Tie-ups with Ambulance services in the vicinity of all pg sites
e.) Tie-ups for helicopter rescue
f.) Insurance cover –Individual, including helicopter rescue and third party insurance cover.

Standards

a.) Rating system
b.) School Curriculum
c.) School Infrastructure
d.) Club Infrastructure

Regarding all the above mentioned issues we would like to coordinate a team of volunteers, gather all information/ suggestions, put them on the PGFI website and expose them to criticism/discussion. You may use the Indian Paragliding Community Forum to discuss the relevant topics.

Clarification :

PGFI is a voluntary, non profit making organization which intends to adopt safety standards, rating systems etc. PGFI will not police anyone or enforce any rules or issue any licenses! PGFI will only provide a reference as regards the sport of paragliding in India for Government organizations and different relevant bodies/ institutions which they can voluntarily accept.

At the moment Dilip Kotecha has been appointed to communicate on behalf the PGFI organizing committee. His e-mail address is diliphkotecha@yahoo.co.in
